How to choose the right LED Transformer for LED strip lighting?
There are many types of LED transformers. For example, constant voltage, constant current and dimmable power supplies.
The transformer is a very important factor when designing lighting. This is because if you size the LED Transformer incorrectly, the components can fail prematurely or in the worst case, the power supply or even the LED Light can break down simply because of incorrect sizing.
In sizing an LED transformer, we need to know the total consumption of the LED light. For example, a 5 metre 14W/M LED strip is rated at 14W/metre. Once we have known the exact LED strip length we only need to multiply the consumption * Meters (14W X 5M)
The result is 14*5 = 70W, plus an additional 15-30% for the power supply’s load capacity and durability.
70W * 30% = 91W. So a power supply of more than 91W is needed. For example, this power supply is suitable.
Standard voltage transformer
The constant voltage transformer is more commonly used in LED strip and other devices requiring constant voltage. Used for 12v LED strip with 12V LED transformer and 24V LED strip with 24V LED transformer. These are the most common operating voltages for LED strips. We also have other standard voltage transformers. The appropriate LED Transformer power is 15-30% higher than the calculated power of the LED Strip.
Standard current transformer
A standard current transformer is usually used for power LEDs and downlights. Many downlights and teholed kits come with their own suitable constant current transformer, but other products have additional information about what kind of constant current power supply the product needs to work.
